Feeding Our Future participated as a sponsoring organization in federally funded child-nutrition programs administered in Minnesota by the state Department of Education.



The funding system primarily reimbursed sponsors and meal sites based on approved claims. It was not identical to a traditional competitive grant in which an agency publishes a solicitation, scores proposals and awards a fixed sum.



That distinction matters. Traditional procurement questions such as bid scores and sole-source justifications may not apply to every reimbursement. The relevant records instead include sponsor applications, site approvals, meal counts, attendance records, invoices, monitoring reports, corrective-action plans and reimbursement claims.

Was Feeding Our Future a traditional grant program?

Federal prosecutors alleged that Feeding Our Future and associated meal sites fraudulently claimed to have served large numbers of meals to children during the pandemic. The scheme involved fabricated meal counts, false attendance records, shell companies and invoices that did not reflect the food reportedly provided.



The first major federal charging announcement in September 2022 named 47 defendants and described a $250 million scheme involving more than 200 meal sites. Charges are formal allegations until resolved through a guilty plea or verdict.



Later court proceedings produced dozens of adjudicated outcomes. Five defendants were convicted by a federal jury in June 2024, and two additional defendants were found guilty following another trial in March 2025. In May 2026, the organization’s former chief executive received a 500-month prison sentence for a leading role in the scheme. By July 21, 2026, federal prosecutors identified the 68th Feeding Our Future conviction.



The approximately $250 million figure describes the overall scheme alleged and prosecuted by federal authorities. Individual guilty pleas, verdicts, restitution orders and recoveries establish their own amounts.
