Free and fair elections are the bedrock of American government. They are fundamental to our way of life and confidence in our representative system. S. 2093 cloaks itself in the guise of transparency and fairness but, in reality, is a partisan scheme to choke off dissent and squelch conservative candidates and conservative political voices. This bill was aptly “renamed” by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell as the “Democrat Politician Protection Act.” It is an unprecedented attempt to seize control of elections through federal government power.

For the People Act of 2021

This bill is nearly identical to the “Corrupt Politicians Act,” and as such, would impose several mandates on states, dictating how they must run their elections. This endeavor to federalize elections is an attempt to, among other things, influence elections, voter qualifications, and redistricting, as well as even provide a match of public funds to certain candidates’ campaigns.Although there are several troubling provisions of this legislation, perhaps one of the most concerning provisions come in Division B, Title VI, Subtitles A, and B. These two provisions are specifically designed to steamroll the Supreme Court’s decision in Citizens United v. FEC (2010) to stifle speech protected by the First Amendment.
Subtitle A is known as the DISCLOSE Act. This is a thinly veiled attempt to reveal the names of donors to 501(c)(4) organizations in an era where the “cancel culture” mob has become the norm. Unmasking private citizens in the manner this bill proposes could dissuade generations of Americans from making the bold stands necessary to improve our nation.
Subtitle B is the Honest Ads Act. The bill is framed with careful messaging, such as stopping foreign influence in American elections through ads on social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter. The bill, however, is far broader.

The Freedom to Vote Act is among the most dangerous pieces of legislation that Congress will consider over the next two years. It’s rife with unconstitutional provisions that threaten the very fabric of our republic. As Benjamin Franklin famously said, “A republic, if you can keep it.” With this bill, it is evident that Democrats do not want to keep it. They want to destroy it.

Freedom to Vote Act

The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act federalizes state elections and makes unelected bureaucrats within the Department of Justice arbiters of election law. Specifically, the bill revives a section of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which was thrown out by the Supreme Court. This section requires states and localities to get “preclearance” before altering election rules (e.g. implementing fraud reduction measures such as voter-ID). 

John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act of 2021

This bill addresses campaign finance, including by expanding the prohibition on campaign spending by foreign nationals, requiring additional disclosures of campaign expenditures, and requiring additional disclosures regarding certain political advertisements. Specifically, the bill expands existing foreign money prohibitions to include disbursements for paid web-based or digital communications and federal judicial nomination communications. It also prohibits foreign nationals from contributing to campaigns related to ballot initiatives and referenda. The Government Accountability Office must, for each four-year election cycle, study and report on the incidence of illicit foreign money in federal elections. Next, the bill makes it unlawful to establish or use a corporation, company, or other entity with the intent to conceal an election contribution or donation by a foreign national. A violator is subject to criminal penalties—a fine, a prison term of up to five years, or both. Covered organizations (e.g., corporations, labor organizations, and political organizations) must, within 24 hours, file reports with the Federal Election Commission to disclose campaign expenditures of more than $10,000 during an election cycle. The bill also requires organizations to provide additional disclosures regarding political advertisements, including the donors who contributed the most money to that organization in the last year.

Americans are grappling with the harsh reality of increased prices on everything from gas to groceries. We see firsthand the consequences of modern monetary theory and the devastation it brings. Unfortunately, the many Americans that struggle with diabetes are no stranger to increased prices. The cost of insulin has been steadily rising for decades.While progressives are all too eager to blame high prices on “corporate greed,” the reality is that this is an issue created by the federal government. Heavy-handed price controls are a deeply flawed solution that misses the mark when identifying the problem. 
Pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) play a significant role in the dramatic rise in the cost of prescription drugs. PBMs are third-party administrators determining which drugs go on formularies (a list of approved prescription drugs that hospitals can prescribe and are covered under an insurance policy). Ostensibly, PBMs negotiate to obtain the best price. However, these “savings” are often pocketed by PBMs themselves and aren’t passed onto patients. Since they are reimbursed based on the markdown from the original list price, PBMs are incentivized to prioritize drugs with higher list prices, so they can receive a larger markdown. This legislation is a simplistic proposal to address a highly complex problem. We cannot afford half-hearted proposals based on unsound economics like this one for an issue that impacts so many.

The Bipartisan Safer Communities Act (S. 2938) is a package of different gun control proposals stitched together with school safety and mental health provisions. As usual for Congress these days, the bill was negotiated and written by a small group of senators in secrecy, with the rest of the Congress expected to vote on the sweeping legislation just days after receiving the text. Expecting members to understand the impacts of an 80-page bill in just 72 hours is irresponsible, not to mention the fact that it prevents the American people from weighing in on the package and having their voices heard. That seems to be by design.

The resolution includes reconciliation instructions that direct several House and Senate committees to submit changes in laws within their jurisdictions that will increase the deficit over FY2021-FY2030 by no more than an amount specified for each committee. The committees must submit the legislation to their respective budget committees by February 16, 2021. 
(Under current law, reconciliation bills are considered by Congress using expedited legislative procedures that prevent a filibuster and restrict amendments in the Senate.)

- the chairs of the House and Senate Budget Committees to revise committee allocations, aggregates, and other budgetary levels to accommodate reconciliation legislation that complies with the instructions in this resolution;
- the chair of the House Budget Committee to make similar adjustments for deficit-neutral legislation; and
- the chair of the Senate Budget Committee to make similar adjustments for deficit-neutral legislation that meets certain requirements such as addressing specified policy issues. 
The resolution also exempts reconciliation legislation that complies with this resolution from various budget points of order, including the congressional pay-as-you-go (PAYGO) rules.

"The OCC’s 2020 True Lender Rule sought to provide regulatory certainty to banks and third-party processors on who is the “true lender” when issuing short-term loans and to support the availability of responsible credit for people who need it most. The Federal Reserve estimates that 76 million Americans only make enough to cover monthly expenses and cannot save for contingencies.Short-term loans are a lifeline to millions of families across our country. By repealing the True Lender rule, Congress would be restricting access to quality credit and incentivizing families to turn to more expensive or harmful options such as bank overdrafts, late fees, or borrowing against their car or home.
It is challenging for individuals who don’t have great credit to get a loan from a national bank. Nearly 30% of hardworking Americans are unbanked or underbanked, and consumers with credit scores under 680 are rejected for loans from banks at four times the rate as those with scores above 680.
These loans have been a much-needed resource to underserved communities, and by repealing this rule, Congress would only be hurting the same communities they claim to protect. I urge you to support a free relationship between borrowers and lenders and to oppose the repeal of the True Lender Rule."

Spending approximately $1.2 trillion over the next five years, the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act is yet another in a long list of bloated government spending bills. This bill throws billions of dollars at left-wing projects, is out of touch with the needs of everyday Americans, and gives the cover of “bipartisanship” to radical progressives that are currently pushing a massive $3.5 trillion budget resolution by a party-line vote.Advancing President Biden’s misguided climate agenda, the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act spends a combined $15 billion on electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure, electric buses, and other transit. This spending includes the construction of half a million new EV charging stations.
Despite years of subsidies and tax credits, electric vehicles remain an expensive luxury purchased only by the financially well-off. While everyday Americans struggle with a dramatic rise in gas and grocery prices, politicians instead elect to make it easier for the well-off to charge their Teslas.
This bill also spends a whopping $65 billion on rural broadband infrastructure. While bridging the digital divide is certainly a worthy goal, reckless government spending is not the solution

Seemingly incapable of meeting a deadline, Congress continually uses budgetary gimmicks like this Continuing Resolution to absolve themselves of their constitutional responsibility.
To make matters worse, Congressional Democrats seek to tie continuing federal appropriations to a suspension of the debt limit. With our total national debt rapidly approaching an incomprehensible $29 trillion, this provision alone should be a poison pill for any self-respecting Republican."

The Postal Service Reform Act would repeal a requirement in 5 U.S. Code 8909a(d) that the USPS make annual payments to the Retiree Health Benefits Fund, from which benefits are paid to retired workers. The Postal Service Reform Act essentially sets up taxpayers to bail out this fund.

"The process for this omnibus is the epitome of everything that is wrong with Congress. This massive, 2,741-page spending measure was negotiated behind closed doors, released in the dead of night, and will be voted on without sufficient time to read. This is yet another example of how broken our appropriations process has become as it emboldens Democrat and Republican leadership to continue spending and leaves the American people in the dark.In total, the bill authorizes more than $1.5 trillion in annualized discretionary spending for fiscal year 2022. This amounts to a 6% increase in discretionary spending–not counting emergency supplemental spending–and will total an additional $880 billion over 10 years.
Working Americans are hurting as inflation reaches its highest levels in 40 years, coupled with record-high gas prices stemming from President Biden’s failed energy policy. Instead of fighting for less government and cutting agency spending, the bipartisan establishment in Congress doubled down on federal spending policies that will only perpetuate the inflation crisis.
This bill also includes billions of dollars in emergency funding that is not subject to budget caps. Lawmakers making the case that this spending is vital should be pushing to let it pass alone and on its own merits, not attached to supposed “must-pass” legislation.
Lawmakers are doing a disservice to the American people by pushing through this irresponsible spending package that no one has read. Between skyrocketing inflation and record-setting debt, the last thing we need is another reckless spending binge, yet that is exactly what the Washington Swamp is ready to do."

Consolidated Appropriations Act

The poorly named Small Business COVID Relief Act of 2022 (S. 4008) will shovel $48 billion dollars worth of corporate bailouts into the economy in the name of “COVID relief.” This includes $40 billion to “backfill” the Restaurant Revitalization Fund, $2 billion for gyms, $2 billion for live event servicers, $2 billion for transportation providers, $1.4 billion for businesses located near ports of entry that were closed due to the pandemic, and $500 million for minor league sports teams.

Additional Ukraine Supplemental Appropriations Act, 2022

The CHIPS Act subsidizes the semiconductor industry to the tune of $76 billion. This bill creates new federal grant programs and does nothing to help American industry compete against China in the long term. As the Wall Street Journal put it earlier this week, “competing with China is the new excuse for corporate welfare.”The American semiconductor industry is going to need much more than a $52 billion subsidy to compete against China’s semiconductor industry.
Additionally, Congress is offering a 25% tax credit with an estimated cost of $24 billion over the next 5 years.
That’s a total of $76 billion of corporate welfare for one industry.
Importantly, the U.S. already leads in chip design (52%) and chip-making equipment (50%). Injecting billions of dollars of corporate welfare into the industry is short-sighted and undercuts free enterprise.
Corporate welfare does not make America more competitive; It only increases government dependence. Instead, lawmakers should be looking at reducing the regulatory and tax burdens that drove American businesses offshore in the first place.
