Party affiliation affects participation in New Hampshire primary elections, but it does not determine which candidates an eligible voter may select during a general election. Regardless of their registered affiliation, voters can choose among the candidates listed for each applicable office.

New Hampshire holds primary elections to determine which candidates advance to the general election through the recognized party nomination process. The general election then presents candidates and applicable ballot questions to all eligible voters within the relevant jurisdictions.

Important differences include:

Primary elections: Registered affiliation determines which party’s primary ballot a voter may receive.

General elections: Voters can select candidates across party lines without changing registration affiliation.

Undeclared voters: Eligible residents can participate in general elections without registering with a political party.

Individual office selections: Each contest has its own instructions and permitted number of choices.

Write-in selections: Voters may use designated write-in spaces according to applicable ballot rules.

These differences mean a voter’s registration affiliation does not automatically determine their general-election selections.

Can Undeclared Voters Participate in General Elections?

New Hampshire does not provide a straight-ticket voting option on its general-election ballots. Straight-ticket voting previously allowed voters to make one party-level selection covering multiple offices.

The state eliminated that ballot feature through legislation effective in 2007.

Current general-election instructions require voters to mark their selections individually for each applicable office.

This means voters must review each contest rather than assuming one selection automatically applies to every office on the ballot.
