The New Hampshire general election takes place on Tuesday, November 3, 2026. Voters will see several categories of elected offices and ballot questions, although the specific selections depend on their residential address, voting district, and county. Understanding these differences is helpful because residents of neighboring communities may receive ballots containing different district-level contests.

The major categories of offices and questions include:

– Federal offices: United States Senator and U.S. Representative in Congress.

– State executive offices: Governor and Executive Council member.

– State legislative offices: State Senator and State Representative.

– County offices: Sheriff, county attorney, county treasurer, register of deeds, register of probate, and applicable county commissioner positions.

– Constitutional amendment: A statewide question concerning the office of register of probate.

– Statutory ballot question: A question concerning school district property tax growth and administrative spending.

– Local questions: Additional matters that may appear in certain jurisdictions.

These categories provide a statewide overview rather than a personalized ballot. For additional information about registration, polling places, and election preparation, visit the 2026 New Hampshire voter resources guide.

Quick Answer: Arizona Mail-In Ballot Return Deadline

Federal offices represent New Hampshire residents in the United States Congress. The 2026 general election includes a U.S. Senate contest and elections for both of New Hampshire’s congressional districts. These offices have different responsibilities and terms, making it useful to understand their roles before reviewing a sample ballot.

United States Senator

New Hampshire voters will elect one United States Senator in 2026. The state has two senators, but their regular six-year terms follow different election cycles. Consequently, only one regularly scheduled Senate seat appears on the 2026 general election ballot.

U.S. Senators participate in federal lawmaking, review legislation, consider presidential appointments, and perform other responsibilities assigned to the Senate. The office represents the entire state rather than an individual congressional district, so eligible voters throughout New Hampshire will see the same Senate office listed.

United States Representative in Congress

New Hampshire has two congressional districts, and each district elects one representative to the U.S. House of Representatives. These representatives serve two-year terms and participate in developing federal legislation, considering spending measures, and conducting congressional oversight.

The district associated with a voter’s residential address determines which congressional contest appears on the ballot. Residents of Congressional District 1 and Congressional District 2 therefore vote in separate House elections. Voters can check their district information through official election resources when preparing for November 3.

Federal Offices on the New Hampshire 2026 Ballot

New Hampshire’s state executive branch includes elected offices responsible for administering state government and carrying out duties established by the state constitution and laws. The 2026 ballot includes the governor’s office and seats on the Executive Council, both of which follow two-year election cycles.

Governor of New Hampshire

The governor serves as New Hampshire’s chief executive and is elected every two years. Responsibilities include overseeing executive branch operations, implementing state laws, preparing budget proposals, and performing executive duties established under New Hampshire law.

Because gubernatorial elections take place every two years, this statewide office appears on the November 2026 ballot. All eligible voters participating in the general election will have an opportunity to vote in the governor’s contest.

State Executive Offices on the 2026 Ballot

The New Hampshire General Court is the state’s legislature and consists of the State Senate and House of Representatives. Members of both chambers are elected for two-year terms, meaning legislative elections take place during the 2026 general election.

New Hampshire State Senate

The New Hampshire Senate has 24 members, each representing a separate Senate district. State senators participate in reviewing legislation, considering state budgets, and performing other responsibilities associated with the legislative process.

Voters will see the State Senate contest corresponding to their district. Because Senate district boundaries differ across the state, residents should confirm their assigned district when reviewing official election information and preparing for Election Day.

New Hampshire House of Representatives

The New Hampshire House of Representatives has 400 seats distributed across districts throughout the state’s ten counties. Representatives serve two-year terms and participate in legislative discussions, committee work, and decisions involving state laws and public administration.

Some House districts elect multiple representatives, which means voters in those districts may be permitted to select more than one person for the same office. The number of allowed selections depends on the district and is stated on the ballot. Residents should carefully review those instructions before marking their choices.

State Legislative Offices on the New Hampshire Ballot

County government provides several important public services in New Hampshire. The state has ten counties, and county-level offices may appear alongside federal and state contests. The exact county positions on a ballot depend on the county, applicable terms of office, and scheduled elections.

Understanding the responsibilities of these offices helps explain their inclusion on the general election ballot. While many county offices follow regular two-year election cycles, certain counties have different term arrangements established by state law.

County Attorney

The county attorney handles criminal prosecution and other legal responsibilities within the county’s jurisdiction. The office works within New Hampshire’s legal system and performs functions established under state law.

County attorney elections are included in the state’s system of county-level offices. Voters should review their county’s official ballot to determine whether the office is scheduled for election in their jurisdiction.

County Treasurer

The county treasurer handles designated financial responsibilities involving county funds and financial administration. These duties are performed according to applicable state laws and county procedures.

Although the office is associated with county finances, its specific responsibilities are distinct from those of municipal treasurers and other local financial officials. Election schedules should be verified through the appropriate county information.

Register of Deeds

The register of deeds maintains public records involving real estate transactions and property-related documents. These records commonly include deeds, mortgages, and other filings associated with land ownership.

The office provides an official recording function at the county level. It is separate from the register of probate, which is also relevant to a proposed constitutional amendment appearing on the 2026 ballot.

Register of Probate

The register of probate is an elected county office recognized under New Hampshire’s existing constitutional framework. Following changes to the state’s court system, its responsibilities became substantially more limited than they had been historically.

The office remains relevant to the 2026 election because voters will also consider a proposed constitutional amendment concerning its elimination. The election of an officeholder and the constitutional amendment question are distinct ballot matters.

What Ballot Questions Will New Hampshire Voters See in 2026?

In addition to elections for public offices, the 2026 general election includes two significant ballot questions. One addresses a proposed change to the New Hampshire Constitution, while the other concerns limits on school district property tax growth and school administrative spending. These questions are separate from elections for individual offices. Each asks voters to consider a specific proposed legal or administrative change, with official ballot wording explaining the matter presented.

Question 1: Eliminating the Office of Register of Probate

The first statewide question concerns a proposed constitutional amendment identified as CACR 13. It asks whether New Hampshire should eliminate the office of register of probate by amending the relevant provisions of the state constitution. The question presents two choices:

Yes: Approve the proposed constitutional amendment eliminating the office of register of probate. No: Reject the proposed amendment and retain the existing constitutional provisions.

New Hampshire requires at least a two-thirds majority of votes cast on a constitutional amendment question for that amendment to pass. Residents should read the full ballot wording to understand the proposed changes before marking their selection.

Question 2: School District Property Tax and Administrative Spending Limits

The second question relates to legislation identified as House Bill 1300. It concerns limitations on local school property tax growth and spending by school administrative unit central offices. The proposal includes provisions addressing property tax levy growth, adjustments for inflation and new construction, and limits on certain administrative expenditures. Bonded capital costs receive separate treatment under the proposed limitations. Unlike the constitutional amendment, this question concerns local school-related financial requirements. The wording identifies the applicable municipality or school district, so residents should review the version appearing on their own official ballot.

Who Receives an Arizona Mail Ballot?

Although the 2026 general election occurs statewide on the same day, ballot contents vary according to residential address and jurisdiction. Federal, state, county, and local offices operate within different geographic boundaries, and those boundaries determine which contests voters receive.

Several factors influence the contents of an individual ballot:

– Congressional district boundaries.

– State Senate and House district assignments.

– Executive Council districts.

– County boundaries and commissioner districts.

– Municipal wards and local election jurisdictions.

– Applicable local ballot questions.

New Hampshire permits eligible individuals to register through designated local procedures, including Election Day registration when applicable requirements are satisfied. Residents who have moved or changed their domicile should review whether their existing information needs to be updated.
