HB2405

Topical Medical Waste Reduction Act

Date of Vote: March 26, 2025

Chamber of Origin: Senate

The Topical Medication Management Act allows hospitals and outpatient surgical centers to offer unused portions of facility-provided multidose medications to patients upon discharge if these medications are necessary for ongoing treatment. It mandates that these medications be ordered at least 24 hours prior to a surgical procedure. In cases where the medication is used in an operating room or emergency department, the prescriber is responsible for patient counseling regarding its use, waiving any pharmacist counseling requirements. The act also establishes labeling requirements for these medications to ensure compliance with existing regulations.1
