Increasing the Minimum Age to own a Firearm

Chamber of Origin: SenateThis bill prohibits a person who is less than 21 years of age from possessing certain firearms, such as semiautomatic shotguns and semiautomatic centerfire rifles. It also imposes penalties on those who aid or knowingly permit a person under 21 to possess such firearms, with harsher penalties if the person knows there is a substantial risk the firearm will be used for a violent act. The bill also adds provisions related to the negligent storage of firearms that could be accessed by a person under 21. Additionally, the bill restricts children aged 14 and older from handling or possessing certain semiautomatic firearms, even with parental permission, and requires that rifles and shotguns be stored unloaded and securely locked when not in use.1
